| The Messages application, available on
some Zire handhelds, lets you create, send
and receive SMS (Short Messaging Service)
and MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service)
messages through a connected mobile phone.
Note: This article does not
apply to messaging applications on Treo
smartphones. For more information about SMS
and MMS on Treo, please refer to the
User Guide for your smartphone.
When using the Mesages application, there
are two connections that must be made:
- Mobile phone to cellular network
- palmOne handheld to mobile phone
The Messages application does not replace
your phone's text or media mesasging
interface. When a new message arrives for
you, your phone will handle it the way it
always has. You'll be able to view the
message, reply to it, delete it, and so
forth, using your phone's built-in
applications. The palmOne Messages
application is an alternate interface to
your messages.
In order to send and receive text or
media messages, you must:
- Turn Bluetooth on, and establish a
connection between your palmOne handheld
and your mobile phone
- Subscribe to SMS and MMS services
with your mobile service provider. If
you have questions, please contact your
carrer.
Receiving Messages
Because the Messages application simply
presents a new interface for viewing
messages (and does not replace any messaging
applications on your mobile phone), first
make sure that your mobile phone is able to
receive messages. The Messages application
provides a unified Inbox for text and
multimedia messages.
- Launch the Messages application.
- Tap the Get Messages button.
- Note: If you have any messages
waiting in the Outbox, the Get Messages
button will be renamed Get & Send.
- The Messages application will
contact your mobile phone and, if you
have any incoming messages, copy them
from the phone to your handheld.
- New messages will appear in the
Inbox, with the most recent at the top.
- Tap on a message to view it.
Sending Messages
When you send messages in the Messaging
application, you're really using the
handheld as an alternate interface to your
mobile phone. The message will still go
through the mobile phone before it is sent
to the network.
