Palm Zire 72 Handhelds

Set photo resolution, naming options and other photo preferences for the built-in camera

  1. Press the Camera button to launch the Camera application. Select the still photo mode if you're not already there.

  2. You can quickly select a few of the most frequently settings directly from the camera screen:
    • Album
    • Resolution
    • Digital zoom (if toggled on; see below)

  3. Tap the Options icon to adjust your photo settings.

  4. Your available options:

    • White Balance: Adjust the color settings for the type of light in which you're shooting. The default, Automatic mode, will attempt to adjust automatically.

    • Low Light: Use this option to take photographs in environments without a lot of ambient light. Low Light images may have more visual noise in them than normal images.

    • Effects: Apply one of several special effects to the image. Effects alter the image as it's taken.

      • Black & White: Takes photos in greyscale, with no color information.
      • Sepia: Takes photos using a sepia (orange) tinted greyscale, for an old-timey photograph style.
      • Blue: Takes photos using a blue tinted greyscale.

    • Resolution: Adjust the resolution at which the camera takes photos. Remember: lowering the resolution decreases the file size (good for sending pictures by email or MMS), and also decreases the amount of time required to capture the photo.

      • 1280 x 960
      • 640 x 480
      • 320 x 240
      • 160 x 120

    • Review: What the camera does after you've taken a picture:

      • On, no timeout: Leave a preview of the picture on the screen until you decide to save or delete it.
      • On, timeout: If you don't choose to save or delete the picture, leave a preview on the screen for three seconds.
      • Off: Show no preview, and automatically save the picture.

    • Date stamp: If on, the camera will record the date in small green numerals at the top right corner of the photo. Date Stamp alters the image as it's taken, so the date cannot be removed without altering the photo in an image editor such as Adobe® Photoshop®.

    • Auto naming: Controls the way in which your Zire 71 names your photos as they are taken.

      • Default: Images are named "Photo_MMDDYY_NNN" (MM is month, DD is day, YY is year, NNN is number starting with 001). The date format will always be MMDDYY, even if you're using a different scheme in your Formats Preferences.
      • Choose Custom: Set your own naming scheme. For example, say you're taking pictures at the lake:
        1. If you want to give the photos a specific prefix, delete "Photo" in the new auto name, and enter a new prefix (i.e. "Lake"). If the box for Show Date is checked (see below), the limit is 5 characters. If it's unchecked, the limit is 12 characters.
        2. If you don't want the date appended, uncheck the Show Date box.
        3. You'll see an example of how your photos will be named at the bottom of the screen.

    • Digital Zoom: If enabled, you can choose to use the digital zoom while taking photos.

    • Shutter Sounds: When on, you'll hear a confirmation when a photo is taken. There may be a delay between pressing the shutter button and taking a photo at higher resolutions. We recommend you keep the shutter sound on so you know when you can move the camera.

  5. Tap the Advanced button at the bottom of the screen for additional options:

    • Contrast: Determines the difference between dark and light.
    • Brightness: Determines the overall brightness of the image.
    • Saturation: Determines the strength of the colors in the image.
    • Sharpness: Determines how clearly the elements within the photo are distinguished from other elements (edginess).
