'Network Resource not available' (when installing Palm Desktop for Treo 650)

Users in a networked computer environment upgrading from previous Treo smartphones may get a "Network resource unavailable" error when installing the Treo 650 software. This error prevents the installation from finishing.

Why does the error appear?
The error is caused by a prior network installation of Palm Desktop for Treo smartphones. Although network installation is not supported for Treo smartphones, it is possible. When the Treo 650 version of Palm Desktop is installed, it cannot find resources required as part of the uninstall of the previous version.

What to do
If you experience this error perform one of the following procedures to complete the installation of your software:

  1. When you see the error message, cancel out of the installation.
  2. Locate the installation CD from the previous version of Palm Desktop. Remove the Treo 650 CD from your drive, and insert the CD from your older palmOne handheld.
  3. From the Windows Start menu, select Settings, then Control Panel, then Add/Remove Software.
  4. Remove the Palm Desktop software.
  5. When Palm Desktop has been completely uninstalled, remove the older Palm Desktop CD from the drive, and insert the Treo 650 CD.
  6. Re-install the Treo 650 Palm Desktop software.

Alternate method
If the process above does not work, or if you can't locate the CD from the previous version of Palm Desktop, try the method below.
