Palm Tungsten T5 Handhelds
Backing up the Internal Drive on your Tungsten T5 handheld

The Tungsten™ T5 handheld has a large Internal Drive for you to store any files you want to have with you on the go. However, most files on the Internal Drive are not backed up during HotSync® operations. Instead, follow these instructions to back up your Internal Drive.

Windows
The easiest way to back up the Internal Drive is through the palmOne File Transfer application that was installed on your computer when you first set up your handheld.

Here's how:

  1. Connect your Tungsten T5 handheld to your Windows PC.
  2. Turn on the handheld.
  3. On your Windows PC, launch the palmOne File Transfer application.
  4. Once the palmOne File Transfer application starts on your PC, you should see your handheld's Internal Drive File Structure.
  5. Select the Internal Drive on the left hand column on your PC.
  6. You can now backup the contents of the Internal Drive by selecting "Save to PC."
  7. You will be asked to specify where you want to save the contents of the Internal Drive. Create a new folder on your Windows PC where you want to save a backup copy of your Internal Drive. Then select OK.

Note: Some files on your Internal Drive (such as Video and Photos) may be backed up during the regular HotSync process if the corresponding conduit in HotSync Manager is turned on (they are turned on by default). In this case, you will have two backup copies of your files. This is the safest option. Performing regular HotSync operations with your device ensures that you are always up-to-date with your latest Calendar and Contacts in Palm Desktop or Microsoft Outlook. Need HotSync information?

Mac
Use your handheld's Drive Mode to connect to your Mac, then copy the contents of the Internal Drive to your Mac.

  1. On your handheld, access the Applications launcher.
  2. Launch Drive Mode.
  3. Select Turn Drive Mode On.
  4. Connect the USB sync cable to the USB port on the back of the Mac, and then insert the other end into your handheld.
  5. On your Mac, go to the Finder.
  6. Look for the icon representing your handheld in the list of available drives on the computer. If there is an expansion card inserted in your handheld expansion slot, it appears as a drive also.
  7. Copy the contents of your Internal Drive to a safe location on your Mac.
  8. When you have finished working with Drive Mode, drag the handheld icon and the SD card icon (if present) to the Eject button in the Dock.
Note: Some files on your Internal Drive (such as Video and Photos) may be backed up during the regular HotSync process if the corresponding conduit in HotSync Manager is turned on (they are turned on by default). In this case, you will have two backup copies of your files. This is the safest option.
